Welcome
to Solutions, the Learning Support Unit at Hornsea Secondary School.
We hope the following information helps to answer any questions
you may have.
What is Solutions?
Solutions was introduced to Hornsea
School to help students integrate into mainstream education. Solutions
is based in a classroom environment, encouraging students to feel
more confident towards their reintegration into mainstream education.
The name Solutions was adopted as we felt this recognised the
fact that every child is an individual and there is a different
solution for every child. Each student will work towards specific
achievable goals, relevant to their personal situation, hopefully
giving them a greater sense of empowerment and increasing their
self esteem and confidence.
Who are the Solutions team?
The Solutions team is headed by Mrs
Pam Frankish, the Learning Support Manager. As well as an extensive
background as a Senior Social Worker, Pam Frankish also spent
many years holding a senior position at Bridgeview School in Hull,
working with all aspects of child development, behavioural difficulties
and empowering vulnerable children. Pam Frankish is supported
in her role by Kay Sullivan, a qualified Counsellor working with
Humanistic, Person Centred techniques.
Based within the Connexions Centre, Solutions
is also ideally situated to benefit from the schools excellent
pastoral support team including the Education Welfare Officer,
Home School Liaison Officer, Connexions PA’s and the Youth
Service.
We also feel one of the most important
members of our team is you. Pam Frankish and Kay Sullivan will
contact you on a regular basis to discuss any positive elements
to the work with your child, or indeed, any problems. Undoubtedly,
the most successful integrations occur when parents or carers
and the school work together to support students.
Do they still have lessons?
Following a brief ‘settling
in’ period, students work to a plan of gradually attending
a number of lessons and in class support is available whenever
possible to help with this integration. However, we also have
teachers in the unit covering French, Maths, English, Literacy,
Design Technology and Numeracy. As well as assisting students
academically, this also helps to prepare them for the standards
expected of them in mainstream school.
How long will my child by in Solutions?
Our aim is to work with students on the
programme for roughly a term, however, some of this period may
be spent observing the students in mainstream and working on any
problems that may arise through their integration. However, together
with our Assistant Head, Gail Smith, we constantly review your
child’s progress making our work with them as proactive
as possible.
I need more information – what can
I do?
There are many ports of call
for advice on Solutions. As well as being able to contact your
child’s Head of Year or Gail Smith, our Assistant Head,
you can speak to Solutions directly on 01964 530257. We encourage
parents/carers and students to visit us in advance and would welcome
your visit.
