We promote Work Experience as one of the most important and unique
opportunities we offer students. It helps build confidence and self-esteem
and boosts awareness of the world of work. Pupils also see at first
hand the personal qualities and key skills expected by employers.
All pupils have the opportunity
of a one or two-week placement during November of year 11.
We are provided with a limited ‘bank’ of work placements
by Connexions and we try to place students where they will get
experience close to their proposed career. HOWEVER
placements are very scarce in the following areas: Law, Accountancy,
Art and Design, Graphics, Architecture, Sport and Leisure, Media,
Medical and Veterinary work, Computing. There are usually no placements
available in the Police, Fire and Ambulance services, hospitals
or leisure centres … so …we
encourage as many pupils as possible to find their own two-week
placements especially in the above areas. As
long as details are brought to us early enough we
arrange for Health and Safety checks. On the topic of safety,
a full day’s Health, Safety and Behaviour Workshop for students
is run prior to work experience to make pupils aware of potential
hazards in the work place, and to cope with an emergency situation.
Placements available in Hornsea or the villages are obviously
restricted but we do have placements in Hull, Beverley, Driffield
and Bridlington. Pupils arrange travel to these, relying on ‘lifts’
from parents or friends or using public transport, BUT
local bus services charge full adult fare during work experience.
Savings can be made if you apply ahead for a Saver Ticket from
EYMS. (The school may also help with transport costs in cases
of hardship if requested at least two weeks
prior to work experience starting).
