Why Study Applied
Business GCSE at Hornsea School?
Did you know
that we have some of the best
results in the school?
The first batch of students to
take the Applied GCSE Business
Studies course secured a 100%
A*- C pass rate, including ten
A* grades and two students whose
scores were in the top five in
the country – that’s
out of about four and a half thousand
candidates! No candidate has yet
achieved lower than a C grade.
Did you know
that we study real businesses?
We take students to Hollywood
Bowl and BP to interview the workers,
tour the sites run and, of course,
to see how real businesses work.
This is great experience.
Did you know
that most of our work is done
on computers?
A Business Studies course is not
complete without the main tool
of business – ICT. You will
learn how to use the programs
in similar ways to those in which
they are used in the workplace.
All of our students find that
their computer skills improve
tremendously during the course
– not just in typing but
also in using spreadsheets, researching
the Internet and using DTP packages
too.
Why Study Applied
Business A-Level at Hornsea School?
Did you know
that we have some of the best
results in the school?
For the last three years, students
in our Sixth Form Centre have
on average achieved two to three
grades higher than their target
grade in Business Studies at both
AS and A2 levels. We compare exceptionally
well with other schools across
the country in Business Studies.
Did you know
that students examine a wide variety
of local, national and international
businesses?
Our students visit firms as diverse
as the accountants KPMG, the chocolatiers
Café Chocolat and the bathroom
equipment manufacturer Ideal-Standard,
in order to research material
for their assignments. This variety
is excellent for commercial awareness
and for a business understanding
that will give you a higher profile
among prospective employers. Many
of our students value getting
to find out how things really
work rather than learning about
things from a textbook.
Did you
know that an ability to research
independently for assignments
is the main skill that universities
want from undergraduates?
66% of the course assessed through
an assignment portfolio. This
means that independent learning
is a priority and your research
skills will be much sharper by
the end of the course –
a facet that will be truly valued
by both employers and by providers
of higher education. This also
gives you the opportunity to come
up with new business ideas and
to see if they would really work.
Some of our students’ research
and ideas have even been used
by one firm we study!
