Elliot Smith - Fantastic
4 Report….Certificate .pg. |
|
| The name represents what the film
will entail, yet is this film so fantastic? No, because
like the true ‘Hollywood Style’ the film
revolves around fantasy, the themes are degrees of
romance, adventure, action etc all the key ingredients
for a fantastic film. Alas, it fails to reach the
criteria for the expected standard, as the storyline
is feeble, dull and ever so predictable. The lycra
clad ‘stars’ prance diligently across
the screen yet it has no effect on the child’s
imagination. |
| However,
it can be debated that the film has one good feature
which is the ‘Thing’ otherwise known as
Ben Grimm which adds a colourful angle to this lame
film. I think his character appeals to the under 10’s
as it is bulky and corny, all misfits become the hero!
I give this film a meagre
2/5 as it tries to tempt the viewer into a false
sense of security with the ‘special effects’
gimmick (mainly at the beginning)! - **
Star Trek with attitude! |

Age 16: - CD Review: Arctic Monkeys – Whatever
People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.
|
|
Many newspapers have told me that these blokes from
Sheffield are to be the band of the year. This album
is a raw, down to earth Indie-Rock affair. With no
songs longer than 3 minutes, each is quick and to
the point: crunchy guitar hooks, furious drumming
and punching basslines. Not much variation here though
apart from slower numbers such as Mardy Bum and Riot
Van.
The content of the lyrics focus around life in the
inner city: |
| Riots, Pubs, Clubs,
and rows with the girlfriend. You could see the
Monkeys as a northern equivalent of the streets
but the Cockney accent has been replaced by a South
Yorkshire twang, not a common sound in a band like
this and a refreshing change from usual punk style
vocals.
The Arctic Monkeys definitely have an originality
and edge over most bands around and unlike most,
they have attitude. However, will they last or just
become flavour of the month? - 3 Stars Out
Of 5. |

Kerbyson, 14 - Book Review: The Ratbridge Chronicles
– Volume 1: Here-Be-Monsters! |
|
After reading Alan Snow’s ’Here-Be-Monster!‘
I felt I knew the ’Boxtrolls ‘and other
’Underlings ‘as if I had shaken hands
with them in person!
Alan Snow ingeniously introduces you step-by-step
to not just Ratbridge but to each individual character.
At 1st I found the story quite hard to get into –
but, as always, once I’d finished the last page;
I wanted to read it again! At the climax of the story
I found myself trying to keep up with all the action;
yet at the same time I discovered I |
knew
what was going on in each individual plot. In a way
it’s like a mystery novel because you simply
have to find out what it is that the ’Snatcher‘
is hiding! But when the tunnels were flooding I couldn’t
put the book down and I just hoped they’d get
out alive!
I felt like I had known each underling for years when
I finished the book because Alan Snow puts together
the characters’ personalities in a way that
made me feel like Arthur was a long-lost friend! In
chapter 50 I thought all was lost and that good would
never triumph over evil but of course in the following
chapter it did!
In the end I found it such a wonderful book that I’d
recommend it to anyone who can read! This book has
a little bit of everything in it and the illustrations
really brought the characters to life! I’d definitely
give this book 5 out of 5 because it kept me going
right until the very end! |
