On
27th April both year 9 and year 11 had the treat
of having the morning and the afternoon off school
respectively. Hornsea English department was proud
to host The Stage Two Theatre Company. They are
a large company who tour schools and colleges performing
educational plays and bringing texts to life.
The morning session comprised a workshop and an
abridged version of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.
While the majority of year 9 (who behaved exceptionally
well) sat and listened to the historical context
of ‘Macbeth’, a small group of volunteers
were taken off to rehearse some excerpts from the
key SATS scenes which they were due to be examined
on one week later.
There were some confident and some somewhat amusing
performances from our willing volunteers. Particular
mentions should go to Tom Chalcroft, Danny Bunch,
Charlotte Handley and Gemma Williams to name but
a few.
The afternoon session also featured a workshop but
this time our volunteers from year 11 had been primed.
‘An Inspector Calls’ by JB Priestley
is one of this year’s literature texts and
studied by over half of our students. The actors
took the ‘volunteers’ through some basic
dramatic techniques such as spatial awareness and
stage positioning. Our students then had the experience
of acting with the company on the stage. Well done
to Sophie Pilcher, Michaela Armstrong and Kaye Turton
who all took on the role of Sheila. Tom Read and
Chris Shackleton gave us amusing and laid back performances
as Eric, and finally Tom Prout, whose Edna was fabulous,
should also be congratulated.
Thank you to all the students who took part and
many thanks also to The Stage Two Theatre Company
for getting up at 5am and driving from Lancashire
and then working so hard all day.
