Health & Social Care (AS & A2)


Course Description

In this course you have the opportunity to achieve a qualification in health & social care.?Units1, 2 and 3 must be completed for AS and units 10, 12 and 13 for A2.

When combined with three units from the A2 level the award is known as Advanced GCE.

The A2 course will provide the opportunity to achieve a full advanced level qualification in health and social care.

What will you be learning?

1. Promoting quality care

Within this unit you will investigate:

The effects of attitudes and prejudices

Rights and responsibilities of service users and providers

Facilitation of access to services

Application of care values

Safe working practices

Communicating in care settings

Within this unit you will investigate:

different types of communication

factors that support and inhibit communication

communication skills

theories relating to communication

how to interact with a service user

Promoting good health

Within this unit you will investigate:

Perspectives of health and well being

Preventative measures and job roles

Factors affecting health and well being

Health promotion

10. Care Practice and provision

Within this unit you will investigate:

How the needs of service users are met at local level

How services and practitioners meet individual?needs

Ways in which practitioners within service work in multi-disciplinary teams

How quality assurance is promoted by services

The effects of national policy and legislation on care practice and provision

You will also need?to conduct a survey relating to quality assurance

11 Understanding human behaviours

Within this unit you will investigate

factors influencing human development

theories relating to human development

how to apply theories to aid understanding of human behaviour of individuals in case settings.

13. Child Development

Within this unit you will investigate:

Patterns of development

Factors that influence development and norms of development

Theories of play and how play can affect development

You will also need to plan and make a learning aid for a child in the 0-8 age range

 

When?

Duration: 1 - 2 academic years (Full Time)

How is it delivered?

The AS and A2 courses will provide you with a choice of assessment methods which will suit your interests and your strengths.

Unit 1 and 12 are assessed externally

Units 2 and 3 10 and 13 are portfolio work.

All are of equal weight and the marks added together to give you a final grade in the summer.

Entry Requirements:

Minimum C at GCSE for this subject is required.

C grade in English required if the subject has not been covered at GCSE.

Progression:

Future Opportunities?The AS can be taken?as a course in its own right or you can go on to do the A2 units making it part of a two tier qualification which contains both AS and A2 units.
Further InformationYou will be expected to do a lot of your own independent research for the portfolio work and some planning and making in the A2 portfolios.
