| Representatives from the Local Authority, Community, Parents and Staff all make up what is an enthusiastic and active Governing Body. Governors meet three times annually for full governing body meetings and in between sub committee meetings are held. These cover curriculum, personnel, sites and finance. The Governors’ role is that of a ‘critical friend’. It is an extensive and demanding role, which is not always easy but is both challenging and rewarding.
What do Governors do and why do they do it? Examples of what Governors do range from attending meetings, monitoring the curriculum and results, dealing with staffing issues, monitoring the budget, disciplinary hearings, to the more enjoyable occasions of attending celebration evenings, school performances and exam results days.
Why? Simply because Governors care about young people having the best chance in life to develop social skills, achieve their best potential and move on to a bright successful future from a solid foundation at School.
The Governors aim is to have a dedicated ‘link’ Governor to each department who visit lessons and give support where necessary. Governors work with staff as Hornsea School continues to go from strength to strength on the road to become recognised as an ‘Outstanding’ School.
Margaret Boyd, who joined the Governing Body in 2011, has written a brief insight into her first year as a parent govenor. You can access this by clicking on the following link, a parent governor - one year on.

 Caroline Kirkwood (Vice Chair)
|
Hello my name is Caroline Kirkwood and I am currently the vice-chair of governors at Hornsea School and Language College having served as a governor since 2008. I live on a farm in Long Riston with my husband and daughter who attends HSLC and our son who is now in his first year at Nottingham University. I work part-time for an Association based in Hull, it is a very varied job which I really enjoy. Prior to this job I had worked predominately in the IT sector, mainly as a software trainer and training manager
I would like to think I bring many life and business skills to the post of governor and feel I a good understanding and relationship with young people. Being a governor is extremely rewarding when you are invited to observe a lesson or activity as the students are nearly always so enthusiastic and proud of what they are doing and trying to achieve. Unfortunately, these days’ schools are very much like a business and have to be managed as such. I hope that I use my years of business experience to good effect.
I am pleased to be associated with HSLC and everyone should be proud of the school achievement. The ethos of the school is to always strive for better in all areas of school live which is an ethos I am happy to support as a governor.

Having been a teacher until I retired, education has always been my greatest interest. I was originally a Hornsea governor when my children were pupils.
I began my present stint some eight years ago. I am also a governor at Leven Primary School and secretary of two educational charities.
At Hornsea I am a member of the Personnel, Finance and Curriculum sub-committees. As the link governor to the Social Science faculty I visit classes in Sociology, Media Studies, Philosophy, Photography, Psychology and Film Studies discussing with the students the topics they are working on and discussing with their teachers any particular problems they might have. I have also enjoyed visits to the Nurture groups and to Student Support - the cream scones are a bonus! The rest of my life is taken up by my politics. my garden and my animals. |

Hello I am a parent governor. I live in Sigglesthorne and have two children. My daughter is in year 8 and my son will join year 7 in September 2013. I have worked in Facilities management for much of my working life but have recently made the move into finance within the NHS.
