Accelerated Learning Cycle

Stage 1 - Connect the Learning

Key Features:

  • Give the "Big Picture"
  • Bell work (lesson starter)
  • May be pre-thinking of the work to come
  • Link to previous lesson/unit/life experience
  • Prompt start

A learner who is properly prepared for learning will have had an opportunity to connect the learning to what has gone before. At the beginning of a topic or module this may involve an activity, which establishes what the learner already knows. Within a sequence of lessons this would be a 2-3 minute activity, which gives the student a chance to reflect on what they learned in the previous lesson. In the same way that you would not expect a track athlete to come out of the changing room and immediately run a 400m sprint without a warm up, this activity is a warm up for the brain and the student is now prepared for the learning to come.

Strategies for connecting the learning

ICT Based Resources:

Paper Based Resources:

Time Review
The Similie
Cognitive Cartoons
Recall of Key Words

Unusual Greeting
Greet the pupils at the door in a different way e.g. mind reading trick linked to probability, a history teacher gives out propaganda leaflets as the pupils enter.

Powerful PowerPoint
Have a series of scrolling images on a PowerPoint relating to the lesson or unit. The learners then identify additional images that could support the presentation or indentify the link or theme between them.

Imagination
The pupils are provided with a hypothetical situation and then describe their experience e.g. a world without transport.

Scrambled Words
Provide the pupils with a list of key vocabulary. They are to rearrange the letters to form the word. They could then define the word.

What a ranker!
Pupils are to rank statements relating to the theme they are studying and justify their choice.

Touchy Feely
Place an artifact relating to the theme of the lesson into a bag. Ask the pupils to place their hand in the bad as they enter the room. They are to try to work out what it is, how it links to the lesson and justify other related items that could go in the bag.
