Focus
Young people actively engage with issues that affect them and those around them. They play a full part in the life of their school, college, workplace or wider community by taking responsible action to bring improvements for others as well as themselves.

Skills, behaviours and personal qualities
Young people:

  • discuss issues of concern, seeking resolution where needed
  • present a persuasive case for action
  • propose practical ways forward, breaking these down into manageable steps
  • identify improvements that would benefit others as well as themselves
  • try to influence others, negotiating and balancing diverse views to reach workable solutions
  • act as an advocate for views and beliefs that may differ from their own.

Strategies for Implementing this PLT into the curriculum
Strategy 1

Encourage pupils to identify positive learning experiences, this way pupils are clear what works for them.

Strategy 2

Controversial topics are a great basis for encouraging effective participation. Effective participators must be capable of understanding others’ opinions and speaking on behalf of people whose views they do not share. Good topics for this would be issues that involve stereotyping and culture.

Strategy 3

Effective participators could be involved in planning lessons, they could offer input into how things could be improved for themselves and other members of the group.

Strategy 4

Effective participation works particularly well in PSHE topics which focus on community, school and cultural difference.

Strategy 5

Strategy 5 – Effective participators can be encouraged to take part in student voice activities.

Strategy 6

Within the classroom environment pair up pupils who have opposing views and encourage them to work together finding a middle ground.

Strategy 7

Class debates work well. Introduce the importance of factual information; this will help persuade opposing team members.
