Reflective Learners Poster

Focus
Young people evaluate their strengths and limitations, setting themselves realistic goals with criteria for success. They monitor their own performance and progress, inviting feedback from others and making changes to further their learning.

Skills, behaviours and personal qualities
Young people:

  • assess themselves and others, identifying opportunities and achievements
  • set goals with success criteria for their development and work
  • review progress, acting on the outcomes
  • invite feedback and deal positively with praise, setbacks and criticism
  • evaluate experiences and learning to inform future progress
  • communicate their learning in relevant ways for different audiences.

Strategies for Implementing this PLT into the curriculum
Strategy 1

Pupils should always be told and understand what they are being assessed on. They need to have a clear understanding of what they need to do before they can do it. Use of differentiated learning outcomes can assist in this e.g. All will, Most will, Some will

Strategy 2

Reflective Learners are responsible for reviewing their own progress, setting themselves targets and developing their own learning. In the classroom this can be done through the use of marking and teacher feedback. To begin with it is essential that the pupils are receiving feedback regularly, the ticking of books is not enough for them to assess their progress. Make time in lessons for feedback, encouragement and a review of learning. Put together a sheet which has a place for the following: Teacher comment: this should focus on where the pupil is at the moment and what they can do to reach the next level. Pupil comments: What have I enjoyed learning? What have I done well? What could I do better?

Strategy 3

In your classroom display examples of good learning, this will give the pupils opportunities for comparison. Sometimes we’re not sure exactly what is expected of us until we have seen an example.

Strategy 4

Celebrate achievements, when goals have been reached.

Strategy 5

Encourage pupils to identify positive learning experiences, this way pupils are clear what works for them.

Stratgey 9

AFL works well in this section, allow pupils the opportunity to review and mark each other’s work, understanding how their work is marked will help them to judge if they are covering the necessary criteria correctly. If you make this a regular part of your lesson, pupils will become comfortable giving and receiving feedback.

Stratgey 10
Timetable progress reviews. Set aside a lesson or two each term which focuses on pupil progress, speak to pupils individually or in groups regarding their learning.

Stratgey 11

Encourage pupils in your class to talk to their peers, what are they doing? Could this approach help them? You could incorporate this into your lesson, our pupils enjoy sharing their work, exploit this fact.

Stratgey 12

Encourage pupils to think about how they learn; does an approach to learning work well for them in other lessons that could be adapted to your lesson?

Reflective Learners should be encouraged to use different methods to display what they have learnt, try a different approach to written work. Presentations, drama, poster work, etc can all be used.

Stratgey 15

Reflective learners should be given opportunities to test out existing ideas and develop new ideas. We must remember that one size does not fit all.

Video documentary/ diary are fantastic ways for pupils to see how they are learning. Watching yourself back it is easy to see what it is you are doing wrong. These are also great fun for the pupils to produce.

Stratgey 19

Reflective learners must value what they are doing and want to learn, try and link activities to life outside the classroom. E.g. English skills can be linked to job applications. Skills learnt in maths can help when working out money and wages.
