Focus
Young people organise themselves, showing personal responsibility, initiative, creativity and enterprise with a commitment to learning and self- improvement. They actively embrace change, responding positively to new priorities, coping with challenges and looking for opportunities.
Skills, behaviours and personal qualities
Young people:
- seek out challenges or new responsibilities and show flexibility when priorities change
- work towards goals, showing initiative, commitment and perseverance
- organise time and resources, prioritising actions

Strategy 1
|
Set concrete deadlines. This encourages good time management.
|

Strategy 2 |
Pupils should be responsible for their own learning. Avoid giving pupils too much help when setting essays, project work, homework, etc. Pupils should begin to set design their own essay plans, project guidelines, etc. Obviously these plans should be reviewed by the teacher before the pupils begin work.

Strategy 3 |
Pupils can be set a variety of tasks, they are to decide in which order tasks are to be completed.

Strategy 4
|
Make time for pupil reviews within the lesson, encourage pupils to set their own goals, targets and action points.

Strategy 5 |
When working as part of a group pupils should clarify their roles and list their responsibilities.
|

Strategy 6 |
When undertaking tasks within the classroom pupils should be encouraged to assess and manage risks.
|

Strategy 7 |
Allow pupils time to develop their own way of addressing problems and questions, it is important that pupils discover the answers rather than being spoon-fed the information.

If at all possible promote the idea that pupils can personalise their learning, it is possible to relate learning to hobbies and areas of pupil interest.

|
Have pupils relate what they are learning to life outside school. They need to know that the skill they are learning has relevance to their life.

Stratgey 10 |
Allow pupils to create a project for homework that links to their personal interests. This gives you a good insight into those difficult pupils and maybe a new avenue of approach.

Pupils could be called on to deliver a starter for the lesson or a presentation; this requires them to prioritise information and manage time.
