Developing New KS3 Units of Learning

1.

Use the backwards design and CASK(e) model

Stage 1 - Identify the overarching and essential questions the students need to achieve / solve / answer e.g.

How do we ensure everyone throughout the world has equal access to clean water?
What does it mean to be British?
Does History repeat itself?
Are all important decisions in history made by white men?
Is there a novel in everyone?
In delivering this – pose key questions – encourage pupils to suggest information that should be investigated to become co-constructors and give them a purpose.

CASK(E) – see planning table below

Stage 2 - Identify knowledge and skills

Stage 3 - Identify the range of acceptable evidence that the student has met the standards / achieve that understanding (build in not bolt on at the end)

Stage 4 - Develop medium term plans (sheme of work) / LPs

Stage 5 - Develop competencies / attributes which present themselves through the development of the lessons

2. Use the enquiry cycle
The Enquiring Minds 'enquiry cycle' is an approach to planning and carrying out any sort of enquiry-based activity. This enquiry model can be used by teachers and students to help visualise progress on any extended activity. You can find out more here.

3. Embed A4L strategies
Assessment for learning: a powerful way to improve learning and raise standards. The new KS3 curriculum provides an excellent opportunity to embed A4L strategies. You can find out more about assessment for learning here.
