Chemistry at Hornsea is based on the AQA specifications which has been considerably modified this coming year. There are 3 topics in Year 12. All carry on from work done in KS4.

Unit 1 contains work on Periodicity, Atomic structure & Bonding, Calculations and Introduction to Organic Chemistry. This is examined in January. 

Unit 2 has work on Rates of Reaction, Equilibria, Energy in Chemistry, Extractions of metals, Group 2 metals, Redox, Halogen chemistry, Haloalkanes, Alkenes, alcohols and basic analytical techniques.

Unit 3 involves assessment of practical skills. Candidates undertake an investigation where they collect and process data and then sit a written test in a similar way to the ISA investigations at KS4.

The latter 2 units are examined in June. All the exams have short answer questions. There are no essays, so a good memory is essential.

A minimum of grade C, but ideally a grade B (from the Chemistry component of the GCSE double award). It would be an advantage to have either Double award or separate Chemistry over Single award Science. A good grade in Maths is also useful

You will know that you can cope under pressure, can carry out experiments, understand new mathematical concepts and can do a subject which is perceived as one of the hardest, and understand that Chemists are essential for modern life

Chemistry is an important subject in its own right but it is also central to the study of many branches of Science. With Biology and/or Physics, it opens the door to further study or a career in, for example: Biochemistry, Catering, Chemical Engineering, Dentistry, Food Science, Forensic Science, Medicine, Metallurgy, Pharmacy and Textiles.

Chemistry is also a useful qualification for those students not wishing to go to college or university but seeking a technical job in local industries or hospitals
