Unit 1: Aspects of Narrative
The focus of this unit is the central position of narrative in the way in which literary texts actually work.  From the work of a broad range of authors, four texts are studied in detail, two novels and two poetry selections.  Assessment is in the form of one written paper of 2 hours' duration.

Unit 2: Dramatic Genres
As the title implies, the aim of this coursework unit is to introduce students to key aspects of dramatic genres, with the focus falling initially on tragedy.  Two plays will be studied, including one by Shakespeare.  Assessment will be by the production of a coursework portfolio containing two pieces of work.  An interesting option in this unit is that one of the two pieces of work can be in the form of a re-creative exercise.  

It is advisable to have gained a grade C in both English Language and Literature.

You will gain a qualification in a subject that proves you can analyse the written word to discover its true potential and meaning, and that you can engage in debate about received and current culture and how this shapes our perceptions. You will have gained skills in communication and confidence that will be useful to you in most walks of life.

English will be an advantage to you whatever you are going on to study. Communication is important in most careers, as is the ability to engage in debate about ideas and be creative in response.
