What Will I Learn?

Unit 3 – Film Research and Creative Projects
The focus of this unit is on two projects related to the PRODUCTION OF MEANING: one is RESEARCH-BASED and the other is CREATIVE.For the research project you will be required to carry out a small-scale research project. The project is designed to develop research skills. It will be based on ONE FOCUS FILM but you must make appropriate reference to at least TWO OTHER RELATED FILMS.

You will choose an area of investigation from the following:
star/performer
genre
auteur
social, political and cultural studies
gender issues
ethnicity
institution
technology

The research project is completed in TWO parts

an annotated catalogue of research resources (approximately 10 – 15 items) and a presentation script of approximately 1500 words

The creative project should demonstrate your engagement with film issues raised during their studies at AS and A2. It comprises THREE elements:

a creative product (short film or film extracts screenplay or extended step outline for a documentary film) and a reflective analysis

Unit 4 – Film Experience – Issues and Debates
This focus of the final unit on the course involves the study of:
Films from different COUNTRIES which will extend your knowledge of the DIVERSITY of film and its effects on a GLOBAL AUDIENCE SPECTATOR issues and how AUDIENCES EXPECTATIONS differ in relation to particular types of film

KEY CONCEPTS and CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE gained throughout the course in order to explore ONE FILM IN A SYNOPTIC MANNER.

What Are The Entry Requirements?

A good grade at AS Film Studies.

How Will I Be Assessed?

You will be assessed in a two and three quarter hours examination in which you answer THREE QUESTIONS, one from each of the topics studied

Is There Anything Else I Need To Know?

As well as the A Level Film Studies qualification you will have developed an enquiring, analytical mind enabling you to enter wider debates about much more than cinema. The course will open your eyes(literally) to how we interpret visual information and create a personal response to what we see
