Depending on the interests or strengths of the students there are different options available. Futher units in Statistics or Mechanics (modules S2 or M2) could be chosen. Another pure mathematics unit will be studied (FP2), and perhaps also Further Pure 3 (FP3). Three modules must be taken altogether.
Module FP2 introduces differential equations (which are of great importance on University Science and Engineering courses).
If the Statistics option is chosen (S2) then in this unit the problem solving power of Statistics is greatly increased by the study of Hypothesis Tests (Significance testing). This has applications even in such areas as medical research on new drugs.
If the study of Mechanics is continued (M2) then the basic groundwork covered in M1 is extended to include the mathematics of work and energy, of collisions and of centres of mass of more complex shapes. All this is directly relevant to engineering problems.
