The course is split into two main areas, theory and practical.
The theory component covers three main topics outlined below:
Anatomy & Physiology. – Looking at the skeletal and muscular systems and how they function to help us perform in physical activity. This also includes elements of Biomechanics, basic physics (e.g. Newton’s laws of Motion) analyising why the body moves in particular ways. Identifying how the cardiovascular and respiratory system determine how fit we are and ways to improve
Acquiring Movement Skills – Investigating how we classify and learn new skills. Exploring how we develop motor skill and motor control. Looking into how we process information to make a decision e.g. When returning a serve in tennis we need to look at our opponenets body position, point of impact with the ball, any spin on the ball, effects of the wind, our positioning on court then we decide what shot to play!
Socio-cultural Issues - The theories of why we participate in play, physical education, leisure and sport. What factors affect minority groups in their participation in activity. Discussions about the arguments between mass participation and elitism. Investigate current issues within sport such as the role of the media and sponsorship.
These are all assessed in a two hour exam at the end of the course which make up 60% of your final mark.
The practical component requires you to be actively engaged in at least two different sports. You have three options of how to be assessed:
Option 1. Your practical performance of skills in conditioned games within two different physical activities.
Option 2. Your practical performance in one activity alongside your ability to coach in a second activity. The coaching has to cover at least a three month period with evidence of its planning and evaluation.
Option 3. Your practical performance in one activity alongside your ability to officiate in a second activity. The officiating has to cover at least a three month period with evidence assessment by a qualified assessor.
A National Governing Body level 2 award for coaching / officiating would help as evidence of your practical.
Due to the wide range of practical activities on offer we would expect all students to be actively involved in sport outside of school on a regular (weekly) basis.
