Why choose Religious Studies?
Religious Studies opens your eyes to the world and people around you, giving you a deeper understanding of the religious and moral beliefs of others. Religious Studies helps to develop key skills which will be invaluable at both university and in the workplace, such as being able to understand, enquire, empathise, compare, critique and evaluate.
Religious Studies is about life, and the way in which society responds to life’s dilemmas; Therefore Religious Studies will be a valuable AS/A2 level regardless of your chosen career.
1. Foundation for the Study of Religion
This module is designed to introduce students to the study of religion and provide the grounding for the two further modules studied in year one. In this module they will be introduced to major influences on the philosophy of religion, ancient Greek influences, such as Plato and Aristotle, and also biblical influences. They will also study the founding of Islam including pre- Islamic Arabia and the life and teachings of Muhammad.
2. Philosophy of Religion 1 (AS)
In this module students will study and discuss the traditional arguments for the existence of God as presented by various philosophers and explore and evaluate challenges to these arguments. They will also discuss challenges to religious belief.
3. Islam 1 (AS)
In this module students will explore the origins, role and status of the Koran. Students are required to study the five pillars of Islam, in particular their practical and theological nature, the architecture and design of the Mosque and the theological reasons for this. They will also consider the role of the Imam within the Mosque and the importance of prayer in Islam. Students will explore the concept of Jihad and discuss contemporary issues surrounding jihad. |
