| What Will I Learn? |
|
Unit 4: Contemporary issues.
You will cover the following topics: the state and the individual, distribution of wealth, health issues, transport issues, science and technology, racism, crime and punishment, the future of Europe and global issues. You will develop your listening, reading and writing skills.
Unit 5: The Cultural and Social landscape in focus.
You will be required to submit 2 pieces of coursework demonstrating an in depth knowledge of 2 topics related to the target language country.
Unit 6: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
You will develop your speaking skills on the topics in Unit 4. You will have to discuss short articles in English taken from magazines or newspapers. You will answer questions in the target language and discuss issues arising from them. You will also learn to sustain a conversation on the topics in Unit 4. This unit will be prepared in lessons but also with the French/Spanish Assistant on the basis of a one hour lesson every fortnight.
During the Autumn term of your A2 level course, you will be given the opportunity to undertake work experience in France.

As well as the A level qualification you will gain an in depth knowledge of the culture of the country of the language you have studied. You will also develop the 4 skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing to a very high standard. |

| Future Opportunities? |
The following career opportunities will be available to you after your A2 course:
Europe: as a result of our membership of the European Union, knowledge of European languages is more in demand for all kinds of jobs.
Industry - in translating and research, or as technical adviser on the sales staff of import/export companies. Of particular relevance here are those courses offered by universities in which science or engineering is studied jointly with a language.
Business - using a language at the junior management level.
Teaching - you need either a B.Ed or B.A. degree qualification followed by a one year Post Graduate Certificate in Education.
Secretarial - courses for bilingual secretaries are provided at many colleges; shorter courses are available for graduates.
Careers where languages can be useful as a secondary qualification include: Airline cabin crew, Couriers with travel firms, Librarian and Journalism, Insurance and Banking.
