Research Projects 30%These projects test recording of observations, ideas, information and insights in visual and other forms, as well as developing ideas and sustaining investigations, selecting and using relevant materials, processes and resources, analysing methods and identifying relationships. You are required to produce two research projects, which together contribute 30% to your final grade. The areas of study are decided by the course leader, but the way that you approach the work and the outcomes are your decision. You must research artists whose work relates to the theme and produce observed studies through drawing, painting and camera work. Practical samples are produced through experimentation with textile techniques. Preparatory work is produced in sketchbooks and two final pieces are required. Personal Investigation 30%You are required to produce a personal investigation into one area of textiles. This enables students to demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between an area of practical art and the theoretical knowledge which informs such work. It could be a study of a practical technique or the comparison of the work of two fashion designers. Ideally the work should be presented in a sketchbook and be a combination of research, both written and visual, personal comments, and interpretation through practical samples. Controlled Assignment 40%This unit is designed to allow students to demonstrate their ability to prepare, plan and resolve their response to a set stimulus. The examining body issues a series of questions in the spring term. You are given at least three weeks to prepare your initial response to your chosen question. You then have five hours in controlled conditions to produce your final planned piece.

An A level in Art is obviously useful if you intend to follow an art based course, but the specialism in textiles would suit any courses involved with textile design or manufacture, and would be a good subject to hold for fashion based courses and those specialising in interior design.
